To live in unity

Jesus has a vision of peace and of bringing people together. “That they may become one as the Father and I are one. You in me and I in them.” His yearning and vision are that we may become one, that we may love one another because we are all part of an incredibly beautiful humanity, diverse in culture, diverse in religion, diverse in so many ways. Jesus says, “Come together.” It is not easy but rather painful. Living with the poor is not always a picnic, but it is a place of healing in a world full of hatred and oppression.

Jesus came to announce the Good News to the poor. What is this announcement of the Good News to the poor? It is simply that you are loved by God, that you are loved by me, that I want to live with you and that you are important. We need to come together from different places and from different cultures. I see this in our community in Calcutta where Muslims, Hindus, and Christians from different denominations live, work, and pray together. Our beautiful little home, given to us by Mother Teresa just next to her Sisters, is a place where we live together and love one another. This does not mean that there is no conflict; in fact there can be more conflict between Catholics themselves than there is conflict between people of different religions. This is because our basic humanity has been wounded by sin, wounded by rejection, wounded by so many elements. In reality, we need one another; we need to touch our wounds and keep the vision. I am wounded. I need help from my community. I need help from Jesus, because I cannot do it on my own.
